Traveling Overseas

- What You Need to Know
-
If you are a member of Marathon Petroleum’s U.S.-based Health Plan through Anthem BCBS, expenses for emergency and urgent care situations when traveling overseas will be covered, subject to normal plan provisions. However, it is important to remember that many overseas providers do not have a direct contract with Anthem. This means that your insurance card may not be accepted and health care providers may not be able to file your claim directly.
On the back of your medical card, you can call 1-800-810-2583 - Coverage While Traveling (Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Core) which is a service provided by Anthem that can provide you with access to medical assistance, doctors and hospitals in more than 200 countries around the world. - What You Need to Do
-
- Bring ample prescription medications: Make sure you will have an adequate supply of your prescription medications to last through your trip and any possible delays. If you need a refill before you leave and there is a timing issue with the refill, contact the Marathon Petroleum Benefits Service Center at 1-888-421-2199 at least two weeks before you leave the country.
- Bring a personal credit card for covering medical emergencies: If you have a medical emergency while traveling overseas, you will need to use your personal credit card to pay for your expenses. Therefore, it’s important to ensure that your credit limit can cover such expenses. (Note: If your service provider refuses to accept your credit card, call AXA for assistance in advancing funds. Additional information is provided below.) When treatment is complete, make sure you obtain a copy of an itemized bill (translated to English, if possible) to submit to Anthem. Immediately after you return to the United States, you will need to contact Anthem (1-855-698-5676) to obtain instructions for filing claims.
- Obtain travel insurance: If you have any concerns about using your personal credit card to cover medical expenses, you may also consider purchasing additional travel insurance from your travel agent. Review the provisions of that policy thoroughly prior to purchase.
- Access medical and travel assistance: AXA Assistance USA services are available to U.S. employees covered under Marathon Petroleum's Life Insurance Plan, and their spouses and dependents, for worldwide emergency medical and travel assistance. This service is offered as part of Marathon Petroleum’s Life Insurance Plan. Before traveling, familiarize yourself with the services (see the website information below), and always carry AXA’s phone numbers when traveling. You should note that all services must be authorized and arranged by AXA’s designated personnel. No claims for reimbursement will be accepted.
